A delightful vintage Portuguese majolica tureen with lid, handcrafted in the 1950s by F. Mendes in Caldas da Rainha, the historic heart of Portuguese pottery. This charming tureen, stamped F. MENDES, CALDAS DA RAINHA, PORTUGAL is shaped like a cabbage and finished in a beautiful light green glaze with delicate white accents, capturing the organic texture and layered form of cabbage leaves in striking detail.

Caldas da Rainha, often called the capital of Portuguese ceramics, has a long tradition of pottery dating back to the Neolithic Era. The city rose to international prominence in the late 19th century thanks to artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, whose naturalistic designs helped define the region’s iconic ceramic style. Cabbage ware, or louça das Caldas, became a beloved motif, inspired by the flora of Portugal and executed in a whimsical, yet functional, form. F. Mendes, believed to have worked as an artistic director at the renowned Bordallo Pinheiro factory from the 1940s to the 1970s, is celebrated for continuing this rich ceramic tradition. His pieces are known for their vibrant glazes, faithful use of original molds, and playful, nature inspired designs.

This tureen is a quintessential example of mid-century Caldas da Rainha majolica. Both decorative and practical, it's perfect for serving soup or as a striking centerpiece in any French or country style kitchen or dining room.

Works
Size: 8.5"x11"
Works great for sublimation. Get plenty of sheets. Great value for the price. The paper is pretty thick and seems to hold a good amount of ink without smearing.
